Destination and experience based photojournalism is a passion of Sydney photographer Simon Bayliss who specialises in Australian landscape photography with a focus on the experiences of touring; whether by conventional motor vehicle, 4WD, RV, motorbikes, trains, or planes.Having travelled most of Australia, NZ and much of Europe, his passion comes from shared experiences.

Over the years, Simon has been published in many renowned publications including:

  • Australian Financial Review
  • RM Williams Outback
  • Australian Traveller
  • Live To Ride
  • Caravan & Motorhome
  • Passionate about outback Australia, one favourite subject are the rivers of the Murray Darling basin, especially the Darling River. In 2007, Simon was commissioned by Outback NSW Tourism to photograph the Darling River for the Darling River Run project and covered all elements of the river, the regions towns, National Parks and the experiences or touring Outback

A favourite credo of Simon's, and it is how he describes his work, is to 'specialise in diversity' as the multiplicity of subjects forces one out of the comfort zone and the elements of this can be applied to other types of photography. This application to his craft can be seen in the imagery of Sydney and Melbourne while further afield he enjoys returning the city where it all started, Paris.

Having spent much of his formative years in the Riverina (Mathoura) just north of Echuca and the Murray River, he recognises a strong connection to the land and rivers of the Outback and he was fortunate to have been able to translate this into photography when he was commissioned to photograph Outback NSW with a focus on the iconic Darling River. In 2009, the project won the 2009 Tourism NSW Gold award for Tourism Marketing in addition to collecting two awards at the Inland Tourism Awards (Tourism Marketing and New Tourism Development).

Despite his innate passion for photography, having first picked up a camera in his teens, Simon pursued a career in Agr-business after graduating from Queensland University. Like a small pebble in his shoe, there was always something that was niggling at his soul; the creative outlet of photography. The desire for a change in direction came in his late 30's when he decided to take a break from the corporate world and fulfil a dream to ride amotorcycle through Europe and to reconnect with the photographer within. So early in 2000 he fulfilled his dream and returned to Melbourne Australia and held his first exhibition "Through My Eyes... Voyage d'un Australien en France".

His landscape work is not limited to the Great Southern Land of Australia but across the Tasman to New Zealand and not content with the antipodean landscapes, he set off in 2009 to the lands of the Vikings (Scandinavia) to photograph many parts of Sweden over the summer.

With his creative desires being nurtured, Simon also enjoys developing web sites and web content as he finds the 'cerebral gymnastics' of web development a great challenge and is particularly interested in Content Management Systems (CMS) as a way to not only share his photography but also his travel and tourism experiences; having travelled extensively throughout Australia, Europe and the USA, he feels that he has a lot to contribute when it comes to the experiences of a traveller.
